A young, outcast Eladrin noble who made a new life for himself in the Marran Empire.

Backstory

Steward Geranil Cerric High Court of Ethasadril Cote, Doveland 25th February, 1852 D.G.C.

Steward:

As Provost of the Cantares Academy of Ethasadril, it is my duty to inform you that your son has been expelled from our institution. Following past policies and procedures, proceedings from our committee's deliberations that were pertinent to the decision have been summarized below according to the academy's traditional assessment criteria.

Parentage and Pedigree

Scribe's biographical note: Naerin Cerric, born Winter 1828. Immediately adopted into the winter court by Steward Cerric following the strongest winter storm in a decade occurring at time of birth (notarized birth certificate and auguries on-file).

As our academy was established to prepare students for a life in—or in the service of—the winter court, we examine both circumstances of birth and early academic progress in our acceptance process. Your son and court adoptee Naerin demonstrated both in abundance. His status in this category remains, unsurprisingly, unchanged.

Academic Rigor

Naerin Cerric demonstrates sublime skill in life sciences (3-time all-academy biology honors; chemical sciences student of the year; 2-time J.C. Kaelon medical fellow), as well as physics, mathematics, arcana, and philosophy (all academy philosophy honors each year). However, his dislike and disdain for our esteemed history and our school's core curricula of religious studies prevents him from attaining any truly prestigious class rank. Though he demonstrates "a keen eye for anatomy" and "a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of life" along with "a savant's grasp of the theoretical intricacies of arcana," Cerric's overall body of work has been described as "lacking in disciplines required of citizens of high standing." However, if our institution expelled every academically asymmetric student there would be a dearth of young scholars in our esteemed community; young Cerric's academic rigor is not cause for expulsion.

Extracurricular Activities

The committee has entered several accounts of Cerric's authorized extracurricular activities herein: First, in his 7 years at the academy, he has been a ranking duelist for 6, and the academy fencing champion for 4 straight; Arms Master Baelon informs us that Cerric "ranks among the top 10 duelists he has trained in his 50 years of teaching." Second, he has trained extensively in practical arcana, and would be a suitable candidate for future arcane training under any of our Abjuration, Evocation, or Transmutation specialists. Third, he has served as class treasurer for 4 years; this is notable only because he is the first class treasurer in over a century to actually develop income streams that allow the student organization to engage in meaningful activities—should his wizarding prospects disappear, he could have a wonderful career in finance. Fourth, he has been a key student assistant in several medical research projects, as well as co-authoring a major research paper entitled "Principles of Arcane Entropy: Philosophical Roots of Modern Mechanics" with Professor Jelenneth. Young Cerric's strong extracurricular portfolio gives this committee no cause for alarm.

Strength of Character and Adherence to the Academic Honor Code

Here we arrive at the crux of the issue; our committee was particularly generous (and vociferous) in offering their opinions regarding this criterion. In fact, it would seem that every positive trait that young Cerric possesses that has been expounded upon in the above categories is connected to a major deficiency herein.

Academically, his well-known disdain for historical studies led young Cerric to violate the honor code in numerous ways; related criticisms of young Cerric offered to the committee include "student evidently manufactured and sold sleeping draught for the purposes of consumption during the required Histories of the Verogods readings" and "student was found using historical textbooks to demonstrate long-arc ballistic trajectories and fricative effects to underclassmen."

As committee members and other faculty have attested, Cerric has consorted with criminals to purchase illicit chemicals, books, and other items. He has indeed increased the size of the student class treasury—by the fraudulent sale of "cheat sheets" and other banned campus material. He has rigged the results of the school archery and longsword competitions for several years; this he cunningly and perniciously combined with an illegal gambling ring that profited on said competitions. The profits from these were presumably used in his interactions with criminal elements. Though Cerric maintained a stellar reputation among his fellow students and was well-known for being one of the more popular students in the academy, we feel this popularity was most likely due to the violations of the rules described herein.

An exhaustive list of young Cerric's deficiencies would be unnecessary at this juncture; the most heinous violations have been summarized and listed below:

  • Improper care of school textbooks
  • Illegal production, sale, and distribution of Class 3, Class 2, and Class 1A controlled substances on- and off-campus.
  • Circumvention of proper student government campaign finance procedures
  • Consorting with convicted criminals
  • Introduction of banned literature to the student body
  • Rigging school competitions
  • Establishing illegal gambling for school competitions
  • Sale of student government offices
  • Evidence of studies in illicit magic (Scribe's note: this charge was the only one that was hotly and closely debated)

To summarize, this committee fails to recognize any indication that young Cerric possesses the character necessary to serve as a leader in our society. His proficiencies in academic and practical pursuits, combined with his lack of scruples, make him a particularly dangerous character that should receive no assistance from any official Ethasadril institution. Our academy has a reputation to uphold. I need not say more.

Scribe's Note: Official decision: Naerin Cerric has forthwith been expelled from the Cantares Academy of Ethasadril.

Provost's Note: As per the committee's discussion with Steward Cerric, young Cerric's record has been redacted and sealed from public scrutiny. As young Cerric no longer holds a position with the court and has fled the country, we feel this redaction will have little negative impact upon our people and will preserve the sterling reputation of our esteemed alma mater.

Provost's Note #2: Reports I've received indicate that young Cerric has taken the name Avecin—in mockery of the great scholar of medicine no doubt—and is serving in a government position as coroner. Though we find this choice of career disturbing, this record will nonetheless remain sealed. The Arms Master has also informed me that Cerric remains in possession of the academy's championship dueling sword. Though my colleagues inform me that the sword was never officially the property of the school--by tradition it was passed from champion to champion--we feel the weight of 300 years of tradition should compel Cerric to relinquish his undefeated status, championship title, and an irreplaceable piece of our school's history.
