The city of Albermarr lies on an island in Gaoland.

Common Knowledge

The city of Albermarr exists beneath a collapsed area of the Gaola forest and is the second largest city in the Marran Empire.

A small island formed from cave-in debris occupies the center of an underground sea. A giant fey cherry tree grows on this island, reaching almost three quarters of the way to the surface. The sides of the cave around the bay form the tiers of the city, though a large portion of the population has adapted to live within the tree's boughs. The saplings of the cherry provide exceedingly good wood for a unique style of dravic ship, and the partnership between the hael and dravon of the city is a relationship unheard of anywhere else in the world.

Thus, the city has become a common ground for many different peoples, attracting nobility and fugitives from the far corners of Letier. From Albermarr, many people are integrated into the Marran way of life, and receive papers to travel elsewhere. The nobility compose a moderate (3%) portion of the Marran population. Though cities are typically overseen through the duchy or county seat, Albermarr is slightly different. Delegation of ruling duties is typically handled by the democratically elected mayor. Although elected, the mayor must meet the requirements of being a Marran noble, no matter how minor in rank.

Shops

Typically Enigmatic: a shop selling scrolls and minor magic items. Vial Brew: an upscale apothecary. Pirate's Chest: a pawnbroker with items from all over the world. Constitution Club: a members-only bath fed by a hot spring. Musings: a seller of fine instruments. Wherever You Go: the shop of Phinnus, a guild cartographer and map salesman. South Oliatt Company: a broker who sells shares in treasure voyages. Timeless Tomes: a seller of blank spellbooks and locking cases. Topsails and Mizzen Sails: sails of a variety of types.

Other Locations

Reeve's Hall: a royal banquet hall seized for public use years ago. Sewer Maintenance Building: used by the sewer workers as their entrance to the pipe works that run under the city. Immigrants Tier: A slum section of the lower city, filled with less than pleasant characters. Sylvestre's Crown: A high bough of the fey cherry occupied by the dravic nobility. Orase Stradui Cathedral: The largest temple in the city, dedicated to Urien, it is located in the crown. Accessible to the public via teleportation. Its bells can be heard throughout the city. Executioner's Knot: The remnant of an old limb upon which state criminals are executed. Dome Bowl: An enormous amphitheater built for the minstrel's guild. Cosmic shrines to the Godyr are located here. The Albermarr Mines: The original marmaron mines for Albermarr, and the reason for its founding. Located in the western immigrant's tier.

The Priestess of Sirrien

The enigmatic high priestess of Sirrien within the city was well known and much loved throughout all tiers of social life. In a now legendary story of the priestess, she once arrived at the lower city docks to witness a dravic ship under siege by the lower class for refusing to sell supplies to the underside, due to a non-existent profit. Taxes were too high, the captain claimed! In an effort to alleviate the situation, which was rapidly turning to violence, the priestess purchased the entire vessel and its cargo for a high price using temple funds, then distributed all the food and other supplies amongst the populace for no cost. Afterward, she gave the ship back to the astonished captain, instilling herself in the hearts of the people.

It was later determined that the ship had been smuggling a large amount of tea that had been given away in the charitable action. So much, in fact, that it fell under an obscure law that resulted in the death sentence of the captain, first mate, and the high priestess herself. Outside of Sylvestre's crown, however, none truly believe the reason behind the icon's execution. Gossip holds that it was an act of intrigue, perpetrated by the wife of the lord mayor, an extremely vain and self-conscious woman who despised the priestess and cult for their popularity.

Regardless of who is in the right, and what is best for the city, the peoples' protests continue in the name of their fallen idol.
