This is a religious page. All 'facts' presented as history may be disputed by those not affiliated with this order.

The rivers of the world do many things. They give life, they take away the dead, and they deliver punishment to those without proper reverence. Átheism is the worship of the rivers themselves as spiritual entities, deriving the name from the supernal word for river (á). The átheistic religion is a rare one, with many different variations all grouped under one umbrella by scholars. It is typically followed by small communities without regular contact with the rest of civilization. Since rivers often carry that contact, the opportunity for this belief to arise in the modern era is rare.

Background

Five rivers of water flow from the heart of Vai, embracing her and reaching out to mankind. Four rivers of aether, marooned from their source and out of water, flow from the darkened skies above, seeking to draw the water from the world and replenish their banks.

Rivers of water transport new life to the surface and the bodies of the dead to the underworld. To those who live in their embrace, they provide small bounties of riverstone (Fahrstone) amid the tumbling rocks in their beds. These are sent to the dutiful and the wise, to protect themselves from the rivers of magic that swirl around man, beguiling them with the promises of power.
