Journeys in the Underworld

The quest to find Banikon's city, steal a loved one back from death, or find a new, faster route through the underdark are ageless sources of inspiration in Mondevai. Heroes and explorators have long sailed and delved deep below the surface. Some have been said to have returned, others never seen again.

The Elynd Saltland, his wife, his piper, and his court are said to have been given the ship of a mortal for the length of all the lives aboard combined. Bound to their new home, they sail the world below in incessant revelry and violence in the way of all the the Great Fey. Occasionally they dredge a poor parted soul from the depths to serve the vessel for a time.

Marran

Stevedores

A feared servant of Banikon named Kavka is said to have plotted his ill-fated escape attempt long in advance. Over the course of years, he tracked the emergence points of rivers and sent a boat downstream before a great battle.

His rise from the underworld did not go as planned, for no one escapes the Lord of the Dead. Now he rides the rivers endlessly, unerring and obsessed, focused only on finding those who blaspheme his lord.

Greystone Delves

While dwarves don't sail the rivers below Letier, they have a well-known penchant for delving deep below the surface. A series of endeavors were funded by the Greystone Clan to discern the maximum depth a dwarven city could support life.

No hard limit was reached, but many horrors and ghastly fates were met in the attempt.

In a helpful coincidence, the clan found that the Marrans' Benthic Diaphragma correlated with a sudden uptick in over-pressured reservoirs. These sites make digging water wells extraordinarily difficult and thus prove to be a soft limiter on dwarven expansion to the nadir.
