== Background ==

Since he was too young to remember, Varis was an orphan. Having never known his parents, he grew up on the streets of [[Tamarr]] knowing only a life of destitution, hardship, and surviving in any way he could. Varis had never imagined any life beyond what he knew, however his salvation would come none the less.

Just after turning eleven, Varis, not being particularly dexterous, was caught red handed while trying to steal food from a wealthy noble. When confronted, Varis did not attempt to flee, but with head hung in shame handed back the bread that would have been his first real meal in days. The nobleman, having no children of his own, took pity on the young peredhil, not only giving him food to eat but offering him a place in his household as a servant.

Being overwhelmed with gratitude, Varis served his new Lord with great fervor. Even the smallest task or chores he was given were executed with a great passion wrought out of thankfulness to the man who had delivered him from a life of misery and loneliness. As he grew, Varis’ dutiful enthusiasm and peerless skill in all he attempted did not go unnoticed by the nobleman he was indebted to. Not content to waste the boy’s devotion and aptitude languish in the life of a mere servant, his benefactor began taking a more personal interest in him, Varis was taught the ways of sword fighting, history, language, and the nuances of politics and high society. It came to pass that Varis was eventually given a knight’s title along with becoming the right hand man and trusted companion of the man he had once stolen from. In fact Varis often thought of the Lord that he had solemnly pledged his loyalty to as a kind of father figure. However, these silly thoughts had no place in the circles of upper society, and although a kind man at heart, his master was also strict, formal, and generally valued action over talk and misplaced sentiment.

Along with his passion and devotion to his house, Varis had a great love of helping and serving others. He desired to emulate the kindness that had once been shown to him. He often used his might and new found position of authority to help those that were either oppressed or unfortunate. Being a man of great charisma and good deeds, he quickly gained the trust and admiration of many. He greatly excelled at strategy and combat, and used his strength for justice within his Lord’s domain.
